    Wasilla, Alaska – Linux Systems Administrator


    Recognized as one of the most progressive utilities in Alaska, Alaska Power & Telephone ( currently provides service to communities located above the Arctic Circle, deep in the Wrangell Mountains and throughout the islands of Southeast Alaska.


    We have a full time opening in Wasilla, AK for a Linux Systems Administrator with primarily Linux and some Windows Systems experience. This position will work with a Senior Admin, Network Engineers, Technicians, and Customer Service Representatives to support ISP operations.  Duties include installation, configuration, and management of primarily Linux and occasionally Windows servers, hardware and software.  This position will also support a wide array of programs and applications on these servers. 


    A successful candidate will be a self-starter, highly motivated, flexible, detail-oriented, and willing to follow directions.  They must be interested in learning and applying new technologies and skills.  The candidate must also possess excellent team and interpersonal skills, the ability to work with minimum supervision and possess good customer service skills. 

    Candidate Qualifications Required

    • High School Diploma or GED
    • 3-5 years of experience building, configuring and maintaining Linux servers in a production environment


    Additional Skills & Experience Desired

    • BS in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Computer Engineering, Security certifications are a plus
    • Experience with an ISP/Telco
    • Experience with Apache, LDAP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Sendmail, SMTP, PHP programming a plus
    • VMware experience
    • Good understand of TCP/IP, FTP, PPP, PPPoE, SIP, Wifi, DNS, POP3, IMAP, and SSL
    • Must be able to develop and maintain clear and accurate documentation
    • Knowledgeable of various firewall technologies and their application
    • Must possess troubleshooting skills and the ability to diagnose and resolve server related problems. Must possess the ability to understand the “system” view of the network and server architecture

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Provide courteous, responsive service to local site technicians, customer service representatives and customers.
    • Assist in monitoring important services and servers
    • Troubleshoot server related problems and recommend solutions based on any findings.
    • Assist in maintaining backups of network equipment configurations.
    • Contribute to and assists in maintaining documentation of configurations, procedures, programs, etc.
    • Provides assistance for performing upgrades and updates of the network software and hardware.
    • Oversee our Wifi service offering. This will include configuring, monitoring and troubleshooting hotspots.
    • Assist in deployment and troubleshooting of VoIP systems
    • Occasional travel to AP&T sites throughout Alaska, less than 5% travel required.
