Recognized as one of the most progressive utilities in Alaska, Alaska Power & Telephone (www.aptalaska.com) currently provides service to communities located above the Arctic Circle, deep in the Wrangell Mountains and throughout the islands of Southeast Alaska.

 

We have a full time/benefited opening for a Power Plant Assistant in Skagway AK. This position will help operate and maintain hydro and diesel power plants.  Responds to and can assess outages and trouble calls. Power Plant Helper will help perform oil changes, valve adjustments, heating and cooling systems maintenance as it relates to commercial power generation operations. This position will also help provide maintenance of the surrounding plantThis position will also be clearing ROW areas around live power lines.

We are looking for a dependable, self-starting person that has what it takes to keep the lights on with safety being the main focal point. Our ideal candidate is a person who is driven to serve our customers with a positive “can-do” attitude, who is great with people, eager to learn and can communicate effectively in a fast-paced work environment.

Candidates must live within 15 minutes of the power plant


Shift available: 7:00am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday with an on-call rotation.  

 

Candidate Qualifications Required

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to obtain a passport and travel in Canada is a must.
  • Must have the ability to use various hand tools, including chainsaws and brush cutters.
  • 1-2 years of experience in electrical generation preferred
  • Ability to do mechanical work on company equipment
  • Ability to differentiate between live and dead electrical wires
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured by AP&T
  • Must be able to get a Medical Examiners Card
  • Must be able to obtain a CDL within 6 months of hire
  • Ability to use computers and navigate programs such as: Microsoft Excel, SCADA, and answer email.
  • A pre-employment background and drug test required
  • Ability to periodically travel to other properties and meetings as required
  • Proven ability to cope with Alaska’s harsh weather & challenging environment
  • Must be able to obtain a State Flagging certificate
