Remote Mechanic/Equipment Operator

Recognized as one of the most progressive utilities in Alaska, Alaska Power & Telephone ( currently provides service to communities located above the Arctic Circle, deep in the Wrangell Mountains and throughout the islands of Southeast Alaska.


We are looking for a Remote Mechanic/Equipment Operator to work on our Hillingaay project located on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska.


This position is anticipated to start in January 2018 and will last until the project is completed, about 12-16 months.


Shift hours: 6:30am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday. We offer a shuttle for commuting to and from the project, and you are not required to live onsite in camp.


This position will keep all modes of transportation and motorized tools serviced and in well working condition at our 5 megawatt hydroelectric power plant project. Primary responsibilities include field repair and maintenance of a wide assortment of equipment including light vehicles, trucks, dozers, excavators, compressors, generators, boats, etc.  Additional responsibilities include metal fabricating, welding, operating heavy equipment and providing general overall support to assist crews with daily workloads.


A successful candidate will be a self-starter, highly motivated, detail-oriented, and able to follow directions. Our ideal candidate will have mechanic and operator experience with a general understanding of welding, building construction, and maintenance.


Desired Qualifications

  • High School or GED
  • 5+ years of experience working as a mechanic on company vehicles and heavy construction equipment; diesel mechanic experience strongly preferred
  • Previous heavy equipment operating experience; ability to operate track backhoes and other equipment for clearing
  • Automotive technician training
  • Personally equipped with own mechanic tools
  • ADL, CDL, Medical Examiners Card, CPR, and First Aid Card
  • A pre-employment background and drug test
  • Ability to periodically travel to other properties and meetings as required
  • Ability to work regular overtime regularly
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured by AP&T
  • Welding experience a plus
  • Proven ability to cope with Alaska’s harsh weather & challenging environment
